‘Longest running idol group’ Shinhwa’s main vocalist Shin Hye Sung returns to the solo stage with his special album ‘Winter Poetry’.
In a cafe in Shinsadong, the reporter met up with the Shin Hye Sung who is making a solo comeback since his 2011’s album ‘Embrace’.
In March this year, displaying the power of the ‘Longest running idol group’ with their 10th album ‘The Return’ and ending the year with his solo activities, Shin Hye Sung had a bright smile on his face and expressed his feelings of happiness.
“This year has been a busy and a memorable year. Shinhwa came back after a long time and showed what we have prepared. Many paid attention to us and we feel very happy. I am also very happy to return with my solo album and to hold my solo concert on Dec 30 and 31.”
Before Shin Hye Sung officially return to the solo stage to meet his fans with his emotional album, he participated in the recording of KBS ‘Immortal Song - Kim Bum Ryong’s special’ on Nov 19.
During the interview, he was absorbed in talking about the memories of the recording.
“While recording, the MC Shin Dong Yeop drew lots and picked me. He mentioned that ‘this singer has many fans who have already stepped in to society’. I don’t know if this was scripted but actually for me who has debuted for 14 years, the fact our that fans have also aged gives me a feeling of reality.”
“The fans are working hard in society and many have gotten married and became parents. This is something that makes me very happy. Even though I have also grown old, no matter what I do I still enjoy doing it with a indifferent mindset. The feeling, although different from what it is when idols debut, is another kind of happiness.”
Already debuted for 14 years, Hye Sung expressed how he feels about performing on the same stage with the juniors. The reporter can sense that his voice was quivering as he was excited.
“It has been about 3-4 years since I promote my solo activities on a show. ‘Immortal Song’ is a program I did before the activities for my solo album began and it’s not an ordinary program. I felt burdened because of the competition and judging so I couldn’t sleep for about a week because of this.”
He honestly talked about the rumours about him becoming the fixed guest on ‘Immortal Song’: “I was only a special guest that day. Among the guests I was the most veteran and I took care of the juniors, so I had a great time during the recording. I finished the recording with singing and comfortably spent away the rest of the time. After the recording, I have this feeling that I just climbed over a high mountain. I will still do it if there’s a chance in the future…but to do it again it might be slightly difficult (laughs).”
How did Hye Sung score his stage performance while competing against the junior idols?
“If 100 is full marks, I would give myself only 70. My stage performance is never once 100 marks. No matter what, there are always regrets in every performance. Even in ‘Immortal Song’ there were regrets. I prepared more than usual but because of my nervousness and trembling, my performance was affected. Despite thinking that I would not tremble since I have sang it so many times, in reality it wasn’t like that. Even till now I feel nervous.”
With ‘Immortal Song’ being the start of his album promotional activities, Hye Sung explained the plans of his activities: “The plan for this album is that it is likely to be mainly on music and radio programs.”
As one of the Shinhwa members who has a gift of gab, although we look forward to him appearing on variety shows, his reply was firm: “This might sound frivolous but this time I only want to sing and not really want to participate in variety shows. This is because since next year Shinhwa will be active again, wouldn’t we all be on them? Without the members it’s a little difficult for me.”

Shin Hye Sung(33) was a “little prince” to fans and a member of Shinhwa cum a solo singer to the general public. Within Shinhwa, who is capable of a wide range of genres such as acting, variety, producer etc, Shin Hye Sung is the only one to chose the path of music and vocals. Regarding this, Shin Hye Sung said, “it is overwhelming in itself to be playing well this instrument called ‘me’ ” and smiled.
Last year winter, Shin Hye Sung’s solo album “Embrace” showed him singing in the modern rock genre. And this 4th December, he’ll release yet another winter special album, “Winter Poetry”. It was 28th November, the day after his birthday, that I met Shin Hye Sung at a cafe in Shinsadong, Gangnam, Seoul, ahead of his comeback.
- It has been a long time since you’ve had an interview with the press. I heard that you were busy during your birthday yesterday (27 November) because of work.
Honestly I had forgotten that yesterday was my birthday. Even though its a pity I couldn’t completely enjoy my birthday because I was working, it seems like I don’t really place an importance on birthdays as I grow older. Even though I’m already 33, it’s ok. (laughs) As compared to the past, the burden related to age has decreased greatly.
- Following last year’s “Embrace”, you’re releasing a winter album again. This time, even the title is winter.
I didn’t think that I’ll be doing this during winter but because of Shinhwa’s activities, it turned out like that. Even though there have been summer albums, but actually, my songs, as compared to spring or summer, tend to be more suitable for autumn or winter. Even though the concept for “Winter Poetry” is winter, we tried to minimise obvious feelings, brought out by bell sounds, snow, hot chocolate, and tried to put in emotions and feelings of this season.
- Even though it isn’t obvious but your musical colours seems to have changed.
During my first solo album “Love of May”, I liked ballads. It was during my 3rd album “Live and Let Live” that I started to attempt making changes. It’s not a shocking change so there might be people who can’t feel it. But I can’t just suddenly do hip-hop or perform in leather pants. (laughs) I’m attempting changes that is suitable and fits within the mould of Shin Hye Sung.
- Are there differences between “Embrace” and “Winter Poetry”?
You can see this album as a continuation of “Embrace”. I really liked last year’s album. Since then I’ve fallen deeply in love with modern rock. But during “Embrace”, as compared to broadcasts, I focused more on concerts so there are too many people who don’t know about the change. Because I felt that was a pity, this time round, I’ll also be having broadcast activities concurrently. I’ve already recorded for KBS 2TV’s “Immortal Song - Singing Legendary Songs”, and plan to appear on music programmes like “Sketchbook”.
- You personally hummed for the outro of “Winter Poetry”.
Honestly, it was awkward and embarrassing recording the humming. (laughs) But it’s a winter album and it seemed like emotions fitting the season was needed so I forcefully did it. My humming cannot be heard while feeling shy and hiding under blankets. Please listen to it with emotions. (laughs)
- There are no songs in this album that you personally wrote the lyrics or melody for.
Following last year, I didn’t write lyrics or melody this year too. Up till now, I’m still not skillful at writing lyrics or songs. Especially writing songs, which I’ve tried but it’s too hard. Even though those around me say I have to be a singer-songwriter to emphasize the feel of a musician but, first of all, I’m a singer and I think that it is more important to be able to play the instrument, that is my voice, well. Up till now, I’m satisfied with receiving good songs that fit my voice. But I intend to slowly try it out gradually in future.
- Is that the same reason why you don’t work as an actor, like the other Shinhwa members?
Every time I get a question like that, I answer with “till now I’m not confident in acting and like music” that people are sick of. It is still the same now. Wouldn’t I be a harm to the work if I suddenly stand on a musical stage or start acting when I’m not confident? Even though my thinking might change about 3-4 years later, it seems best to do what I can do the best at now, music.
- Don’t you have plans to nurture hoobaes, like Shinhwa’s Andy?
Up till now, I myself haven’t fully matured so I’m busy enough with doing that. (laughs) I’m overwhelmed with just producing my album. So I don’t think I have the time to nurture other hoobaes. Even though Andy’s group Teen Top has now rightfully joined the ranks of idol stars, it was a hard time when they first started out and there were lots of difficulties. I think it’ll be beyond my abilities.
- Up till where do you intend to mature to? The level of “national singer” Psy? (laughs)
For someone like me, I can’t even imagine what happened to Psy happening to me. (laughs) I have no standard for my growth. But I want to let more people know about me, to create even more hit songs, and to stand on even more stages. It’s a homework for me.
- As a member of Shinhwa, there is also the homework of being a role model for the hoobae idol groups.
I think we really have to work hard. At some point, we became someone’s sunbae. Actually, if hoobaes come to give their greetings at the waiting room, I’m shy and embarrassed. I wish to be a sunbae they’re comfortable with but it’s awkward for me and to them, I seem to be someone difficult. It’ll change if we promote together right.
- Between being the role model of boy groups and the ideal type of girl groups, which do you prefer to hear?
Please think for yourself which one I would like more. (laughs). Both are really things to be happy about. But aren’t I too old now to be the ideal type of girl groups. (laughs)
- This year, which you started with Shinhwa, will end with your solo concert.
It’ll occur this 30 and 31st December at the Peace Hall in Kyunghee University, Seoul. I’m not showing off but they say it’s all sold-out. (laughs) Similarly, for a solo concert, the more times it is held, the better it gets. Especially this year, because it is a concert with a new album, so for me and the audience, it seems like I can make it one that will end with good memories. There will be relaxed performances and also plans to put in dance and girl group songs, both of which are a nightmare to me. (laughs)
- Is the special guest Shinhwa?
Nothing is confirmed yet now. Last year’s year-end concert, Eric and Jun Jin came but if they keep coming, won’t it get boring. (laughs) Even though it is good to introduce guests to promote a concert but it’s a pity that the surprise given to the audience at the concert will disappear. That’s why I always find it hard to answer the question “what are you preparing for the concert?”
- Don’t you have plans to have a concert in small theaters where you can breathe in close proximity with the fans?
I’ve thought a lot about holding a small-scale concert for about a month in a small theatre like a musical theatre. But a small-scale concert will need one’s capabilities as a support. It’s a pity that till now, I haven’t been able to try it but I definitely will like to try it after making lots of preparations.
- Are you going to be starting next year with Shinhwa activities again after ending this year with your solo activities?
Yes. Shinhwa’s activities is planned for the first half of next year. This year, with Shinhwa’s comeback, solo album and the year-end concert, I’m able to spend the year happily. With the happiness received in 2012, I hope it will become the driving force for Shinhwa’s 2013 activities.
